Sadiq Khan plans to close Eltham Police Station and community bases

The Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced plans to close Eltham Police Station, as well as local Safer Neighbourhood Bases in the borough.

The news follows leaked emails revealed last month that showed the Mayor’s office has been planning the closures in secret since last December, despite this not appearing in the Mayor’s published Police and Crime Plan in March.

The closures plan also comes on top of controversial plans to effectively scrap the position of Borough Commander, with one command structure instead covering several boroughs.

Petitions have been started to Save Eltham Police Station and Save Coldharbour Police Base by local Conservative councillors representing the wards they serve, with residents also being urged to take part in the Mayor of London’s consultation before 6th October.

Councillor Matt Hartley, Leader of Greenwich Conservatives, said: "Instead of constantly passing the buck, Sadiq Khan should start taking responsibility for his own decisions. He's the Mayor of London and it’s his budget to manage - and leaked emails have shown he has been planning these closures since last December. I am concerned that this consultation is a sham, and he has already made up his mind.

“Nevertheless, we have to make sure as many of us give our views as possible, to show Sadiq Khan the strength of feeling on the impact this will have on policing in our borough.

“For example, in the ward that I represent, the Coldharbour Police Base is crucial in keeping on top of crime and anti-social behaviour in the local area – including through new locally-monitored CCTV, which is now making a huge difference. Cllr John Hills, Cllr Mandy Brinkhurst and I will be fighting to the Mayor’s plan to close it all the way.”

A petition started by Eltham Conservative councillors to Save Eltham Police Station gained more than 250 signatures in its first few hours.

Cllr Charlie Davis, Eltham North ward councillor, said: “Eltham Police Station plays an important role allowing residents to report crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. If Sadiq Khan gets his way and Eltham Police Station is closed, the only station for residents to report crimes to in person in the Borough would be Plumstead. I hope as many residents as possible will sign our petition and takes part in the consultation to force Sadiq Khan to think again.”
