Following campaigning by Charlie Davis, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Eltham & Chislehurst, Berkeley Homes have reversed their decision to evict the traders who operate on Pegler Square.
The decision comes after Charlie wrote to Berkeley Homes in November asking them to meet with the traders and reconsider their decision given the positive contribution made by the traders to the local community and economy.
A number of meetings then followed between Charlie, Berkeley Homes and the traders with the objective of finding a solution to the problem. This was finally reached late last week as Berkeley Homes confirmed they would be looking to work with the traders to secure their long-term future in Pegler Square, as well as apologising for the way the previous decision had been communicated.
The decision will be welcomed by the local community, as many residents took to social media making clear their opposition to Berkeley’s plans and supporting the continued presence of the traders.
Charlie said, ‘I’m delighted that after months of meetings, Berkeley Homes have reversed their previous decision to serve notice to the Kidbrooke Village traders. There are still some issues to be ironed out, but this is all a positive step in the right direction. The traders have made an enormous contribution not just to the local economy in Kidbrooke Village, but in helping to foster and develop the local community. I’m pleased to have been able to play my part in helping to ensure that continues for the long-term.’
